Witnessing is very powerful when the witnesser is lost. Whenever the no-mind or ego less state happens to coincide with witnessing – one may get a glimpse of inside ‘truth’ that liberates, then you are no more same person.
Kabir said that when outside and inside becomes one, then only you have achieved destiny as human being.
We know about the outside only. Inside is not even felt by many! How can one meet to whom you do not know? Only the inside can find you, there is no other way this is why it is beyond our control. Even if inside wishes to meet you in present moment, then you must be looking at it too, to be able to meet.
Osho advices to become watcher. Osho spoke on Rumi through these lines as below:
We are the mirror, that’s what I have been saying to you again and again; that we are not the doer, we are only the mirror. Don’t get identified with your doings, with your actions; remain a witness, just a watcher. But we are not taught the most essential things of life, we are taught all kinds of stupid things.
The most essential is the art of watchfulness.
…
Rumi is right when he says, “We are the mirror, as well as the face in it.”
We are the watcher and the watched. There is no separation between us and existence. We are part of one whole, just as my two hands are part of one organic unity. I can manage that they fight with each other. I can manage that they are friendly, loving and warm to each other. I can hit one hand with the other hand and wound it.
When you are seeing the tree, or the moon, or the river, or the ocean, you are the mirror and the mirrored too. It is one existence.
This is the basic conclusion of all the mystics, that the whole of existence is one entity, there is no duality. All duality deep down is joined into one existence.
…
Just be watchful this minute. In this silence you are tasting something which is beyond time.
We are tasting the taste of this minute of eternity. We are pain, and what cures pain, both. We are agony and we are ecstasy. We are hell and we are heaven, because there is no contradiction in existence. They are all joined together.
No-mind state makes you available in present moment, and witnessing lets you see yourself so that anything coming out can see you ‘watching’ at it. Simple.
Awareness meditation is the way worked for me, may be you too find it suitable otherwise Dynamic meditation is for most of the people. There are 110 other meditation techniques discovered by Indian Mystic Gorakhnath about 500years before and further modified by Osho that one can experiment and the suitable one could be practiced in routine life.

Disciples of Jesus left him alone in last minutes but Osho’s disciples remained with him till he left his body willingly after working, till last day, for all of us to get enlightened. Jesus tried hard till last minute, before being caught, to teach meditation to his disciples. As per Saint John’s Gospel:- Jesus used word ‘Sit’ to transfer his meditative energy to them and went on to pray God, but on returning he found them sleeping. He tried two times again but in vain.
Even today Zen people use word ‘Sit’ for meditation in their saying ‘Sit silently, do nothing, season comes and the grass grows by itself green’.
